Simple Sensory Tricks to Outsmart Dental Anxiety

Anxious Patient Feeling Nervous Before Dental Treatment

If the mere thought of a dental visit makes your stomach drop, your feelings are entirely valid, and you are not alone. At Icon Dental Clinic, we treat wonderful people every week in Waterloo who deal with different levels of dental nerves. Making a few simple, everyday tweaks to your environment can help reduce dental anxiety and keep you calm.

Control the Sounds with Your Own Audio Escape

The many noises of a dental office, including the hum of cleaning tools, are a major trigger for people with a fear of the dentist. Fortunately, you can easily build your own personal sound barrier to tune these noises out. Before you hop into the chair, pop in your favorite pair of wireless earbuds. You can queue up an engaging podcast, an audiobook, or a playlist of your favorite songs. Blocking out the clinic’s ambient sounds helps you focus your attention elsewhere and stay more relaxed.

Dress for Physical Comfort

Your nervous system reacts to everything, including the clothes you wear. If you come to the dentist straight from a stressful meeting in tight corporate clothes, your body is already holding onto tension. Try dressing in loose, comfortable layers for your appointment. Bring a cozy sweater you love, or wear your softest t-shirt. Some of our patients even bring a pair of warm, plush socks. Being physically comfortable makes it significantly easier for your muscles to relax in the chair.

Buffer Time Before Your Visit

When you rush into a dental appointment straight out of heavy Waterloo traffic, your adrenaline is already pumping. Sitting down in the waiting room with all that frantic energy makes your mind spin out with “what-if” thoughts. Try giving yourself a fifteen-minute buffer window before your visit. Park your car early, grab a soothing herbal tea, or sit quietly and listen to a calming song. Entering our office with a relaxed heart rate sets a completely different tone for your entire visit.
